Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Phil Rosen has had a lifelong fascination with evolutionary ecology and natural history, especially herpetology. From his stomping grounds in New York and New Jersey, he went to the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology for a B.S. (1980), working extensively in Michigan's marshes and swamps. He then ventured further west for an M.S. in Zoology (Arizona State University, 1987) and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (University of Arizona, 2000), working on aquatic and grassland herpetofauna and desert vertebrate community ecology. His dissertation synthesized twelve years of monitoring for climate, small mammals, lizards, snakes, and other predators at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.
Dr. Rosen is currently adjunct faculty in the School of Natural Resources at the UofA. Recently, he has focused on ecological and conservation studies of lizards in metropolitan Tucson, chytridiomycosis and population status in ranid frogs, aquatic vertebrate status in northwestern Mexico, the phylogeography of the Sonoran Mud Turtle, and other projects (see below). He has worked closely with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, USFWS, and numerous other agencies. More recently, he participated actively with the BLM at Las Cienegas NCA and Ironwood Forest National Monument, and with Pima County, the Town of Marana, and the City of Tucson to assist with habitat conservation planning.
